Reflections on 9 NYU Students' Alternative Spring Break 2006, helping with clearing and reconstruction in Katrina-afflicted New Orleans.

Monday, March 27, 2006

I still haven't been suddenly struck with the right words to express what we saw and heard in New Orleans - or to qualify my reactions to the news that's been coming through since ( see below, and Relief Spark's Website for some of it).

I don't want to leave the blog languishing for too long. I'm not going to waste my time and yours rambling pointlessly, though.

So, for lack of the right words to be more eloquent, some notes...

-If we can get through next hurricane season without any major disasters, will more people come back?
-How is this election going to work with a majority of absentee voters when St Bernard Unified School has to go 50 miles for their mail?
-Why is FEMA closing the volunteer camps? The estimate for spring break is 116 houses gutted by over 500 volunteers - on the basis of the $4,000/house cost we were given, that's nearly $1,000 of work per person. Surely it doesn't cost the camps $1,000/person/week, does it? And even if there were a few too many people on the ground, turning everyone away isn't the answer...

Photos by next week at the very latest I promise.
